Because we know God.

I write a lot about God’s voice.  I write a lot about the fear of missing it.

When I discuss hearing God, I don’t always mean audibly. We hear God in different ways, but largely through scripture, people, and the Holy Spirit within.

You can probably tell that I personally struggle with being too obsessed with hearing God’s voice, to the point that I emphasize the hearing  and forget I’m listening to a God who loves me and wants me to get it right.

Because my hearing God feels like it inherently depends on me, I put pressure on myself to hear the right thing.  Once again, I undoubtedly overcomplicate my pursuit of Christ.

Our ability [or inability] to hear God does not change who God is. And God’s voice will always be consistent with His character .

At the risk of oversimplifying an indescribable God, it helps to recall qualities of the unchanging God we serve:

God is love.

God is grace.

God is good, and His love endures forever.

God disciplines those He loves, so His discipline is inherently loving.

God is full of life and abundance in Christ.

God’s power is made perfect in weakness.

God is one of perfect peace.

God is working, in all things, for my good and His glory.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

God’s peace transcends all understanding and guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

God has not given you a spirit of fear.  He has given you a spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

God calls his own sheep by name and leads them.

God has searched you, and He knows you.

God hems you in behind and before.

God lays His hand on you.

God’s hand guides you, and His right hand holds you fast.

God’s yoke is easy and His burden is light.

God knows the plans He has for you, and they are prosperous and good.

God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

God is the same yesterday and today and forever.

I could go on.  Although I’m in no way  indicating God’s voice will always be speaking how or saying what we want to hear. Sometimes, that voice is stern. Sometimes it’s thunderous. Sometimes it’s silent.

But God’s voice will always fit within the framework of God’s character.

So if the voice you’re hearing is inconsistent with who God is, as confirmed in His Word, it cannot be God’s voice.

There is no better way to guarantee that you know God’s voice than to know God.

When I call to mind who our Lord is, as if His goodness and ineffable qualities are possible to grasp, let alone articulate, I am dumbfounded that a God this incredible would know me personally and want me to know Him. And I quickly regain confidence in the reality that a God this loving and good and personal would never want me to miss knowing Him or His voice.

And this is true for you.
